George Stephenson was the sixth child of Thomas Stephenson & Elizabeth Gibson christened May 15th, 1856 at Stokesley, Yorkshire.
In 1861 the family was living at North Side, Stokesley where his father was a shoemaker.
George was still living at home at High St South, Stokesley in 1871. Brother Henry & sister Elizabeth were also at home.
George married Mary Smith in July-September 1875 at Stokesley. Mary was born October 17th, 1854 at Osmotherley, Yorks, the daughter of Grace & John Smith, a flax dresser.
In 1881 George & Mary were living at 5 Northumberland Court, Bilton-cum-Harrogate, Yorks. George was a railway porter & they now had 3 children – Emily (4), Edith M (3) & Herbert (9 months).
Sadly George died at Northumberland Court, Harrogate on July 7th, 1882, aged 26 & was buried July 10th 1882 at St Peter & St Paul’s, Stokesley.
In 1891 widowed Mary was living at 16 Mayfield Terr, Bilton-cum-Harrogate & was described as an electric belt maker. She was having to support their 3 children who were all at home. They had a boarder, Abraham Hewson, who was a saddler & harness maker.
Mary was still at Mayfield Terr, now number 27, in 1901. Daughter Edith, an assistant in a boot shop, & son Herbert, a pork butcher's assistant, were still living at home. Daughter Emily had died in 1898 aged 22.
Sadly son Herbert died in 1909, aged 29 years.
By 1911 Mary had moved to 24 Airlie Place, Leeds & was described as independent. Daughter Edith was still living with her & working as a boot dealer’s assistant. They had a visitor at the time of the census, Arthur Wallis, a wine merchant manager from Dorset.
The 1939 register shows Mary living at 90 Crosby St, Darlington & still with her was daughter Edith who worked as a retail book assistant.
In July-September 1946 Edith married George Smith at Leeds.
